June 26, 27 and July 3, 4 Sears has partnered with Ontario Electronics Stewardship (Do What You Can), Sony Canada, and Burlington Hydro Inc to host at-store E-waste take back events on June 26th & 27th and July 3rd & 4th, 2010 for Sears customers across Ontario.
This event will promote the most efficient Energy Star® televisions on the market, (Energy Star 4.0 or higher TVs use 35% less energy than a standard television), and provide our customers the opportunity to drop off their old electronics (TVs, computer monitors, CPUs, laptops, desktop printers and computer peripherals (i.e. mouse, keyboard, etc.)
What is e-waste and why does it need to be recycled:
• Electronic waste leaks toxic heavy metals along with equally harmful chemicals that end up in our soil and water supply. These substances are dangerous to humans, wildlife, and the environment.
• Rapid advances in technology, demand for new products, and population increases are accelerating the amounts of e-waste piling up in landfills across Canada.
• More than 270,000 tonnes of computer equipment, phones, televisions, stereos and small home appliances accumulate in Canadian landfills each year.
• E-waste is known to contain various inherently hazardous substances including arsenic, mercury, beryllium, cadmium, and lead.
• If improperly processed, E-waste poses significant human risks such as skin and lung disease, as well as other adverse health effects.
